Gold หรือ ในภาษาไทยคือ "ทองคํา "คือธาตุเคมีที่มีสัญลักษณ์ Au มาจากภาษาลาติน aurum แปลว่ารุ่งเช้า และหมายเลขอะตอมของ 79 ทองคําเกิดขึ้นตามธรรมชาติในลักษณะเป็นเม็ดเล็กๆ ปนอยู่ในหิน บางแหล่งจะอยู่

ทองคําเป็นแร่ที่ไม่ถูกทําปฎิกิริยากับก๊าซออกซิเจน ดังนั้นทองคําเก็บไว้นานเป็น 100 ปี พันปี ก็จะยังคงมีสีเหลืองทอง มันเงาเหลืออร่าม ทองคําละลายในปรอท แต่ไม่ทําปฎิกิริยากับปรอท ทองคําไม่ถูกละลายโดยกรดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือในด่าง แต่ทองจะถูกละลายในกรดหลายๆชนิดผสมกันที่เรียกว่า aqua regia หรือ chloroauric acid
วิธีทดสอบว่าเป็นทองคําแท้หรือไม่ โดยใช้กรดไนตริก ( HNO3, Nitric Acid) ถ้าเป็นโลหะชนิดอื่นๆเช่น แร่เงิน ทองแดง เมื่อโดนกรดไนตริก จะละลาย แต่แร่ทองคําจะไม่ละลาย
ทองคําในปัจจุบัน มีที่ใช้คือโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กตรอนนิค เครื่องเพชร พลอย อุปกรณ์ฟันปลอมทางทันตแพทย์ และเครื่องมือแพทย์บางอย่าง
ในอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันปี 2009 หรือ พศ 2552 แร่ทองถูกขุดมาทั้งหมด 165,000 ตัน เทียบเท่า 5,300,000,000 ounces troy หรือในแง่ของปริมาณประมาณ 8,500 ลูกบาศก์เมตรหรือลูกบาศก์ 20.4m
